This is a practical course designed for individuals working on remote sites or participating in outdoor activities within hours of medical assistance. This course provides participants with an introduction to wilderness first aid, with an emphasis on practical skills, decision making and dealing with environmental conditions. The Wilderness First Aid course may be modified to accommodate other elements of wilderness first aid, outdoor safety or leadership training.

Topics Covered

Patient assessment, shock, wound management, burns, fractures and sprains, environmental injuries, common medical problems, first aid kits.

Recertification

Certification is valid for three years. To recertify this course, you must take another Wilderness First Aid (20 hours).

COURSE OUTLINE

Advanced Wilderness First Aid (40 hours) $505.00 CAD

This course has become a minimum standard for outdoor professionals who work in a wilderness setting. Course content extends far beyond urban-based first aid programs to include elements inherent in working on remote sites beyond the reach of Emergency Medical Services.

Topics Covered

WFA theory and practice, with a special emphasis on accident scene management, group leadership, rescuer responsibility and liability, prevention of injuries, advanced first aid kits, wound management and managing the trauma victim.

Recertification

Certification is valid for three years. To recertify this course, you must take a Wilderness First Aid (20 hours) before the expiry date on your card.

COURSE OUTLINE

Wilderness First Responder (80 hours) $855.00

This program is designed for search and rescue personnel, outdoor professionals working in remote settings and those requiring a solid foundation in wilderness pre-hospital emergency care.

Topics Covered

In addition to reviewing material covered in the 40-hour program, this program covers traumatic injuries, incident command, long-term patient care, leader responsibility and liability, advanced first aid kits, wound cleaning, evacuation procedures, helicopter safety, altitude, search and rescue, and working with Emergency Medical Services.

Recertification

Certification is valid for three years. To recertify this course, you must take an Advanced Wilderness First Aid (40 hours) or a Bridge to Wilderness First Responder course (50 hours) before the expiry date on your card.

Bridge to Wilderness First Responder (50 hours) $510.00

Sirius has developed a special bridge course for those who would like to upgrade their certification from Advanced Wilderness First Aid to Wilderness First Responder. To be eligible for the Wilderness First Responder bridge course a participant must have obtained or recertified the Advanced Wilderness First Aid certification within the past 12 months.

In addition to a brief review of material covered in the 40-hour program, the bridge course focuses primarily on the advanced material and skills included in the Wilderness First Responder program.

Wilderness Readiness & Survival (16 – 40 hours)

This practical and modular custom program is designed for individuals who plan to go into the wilderness for professional or personal reasons and need this basic knowledge to be self-reliant.

Course content includes equipment usage, food preparation, survival skills, emergency signalling, clothing systems and insulation, accident prevention and emergency shelters.

CPR-AED (level A+, level C)

Sirius CPR-AED training follows the standards and guidelines of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), which includes the American Heart Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Sirius CPR courses are taught within other Sirius wilderness first aid and remote safety courses.

Topics Covered

Theory: Cardio-respiratory anatomy and function, early warning signs of a heart attack, emergency medical services, management of a heart attack victim, AED and CPR. Practice: Adult CPR sequence and obstructed airway manoeuvre.
